PORTLAND, Ore. – May 22, 2018 – Portland Farmers Market and COUNTRY Financial® will announce the winner of the 2018 Reusable Bag Design Contest and distribute 1,000 free canvas bags on Saturday, June 9 at the PSU Farmers Market. The unveiling of the winning design and awards ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the market’s main stage. The canvas shopping bags bearing the winning design will be distributed to market goers following the ceremony, while supplies last.
Over one hundred Portland-area high school students submitted original artwork in the eight annual bag design contest. The finalists for the grand prize and the People’s Choice winner will be present at the unveiling.
The student finalists are Nancy Grace Bignell, a senior at Lakeridge High School, Sasha Hennig, a sophomore at Lakeridge High School, Trent Nesbitt, a sophomore at Wilson High School and Chloe Unflat, a sophomore at Wilson High School.
“The Portland Farmers Market Reusable Bag Design Contest is a wonderful opportunity for our young artists,” said Marie Pearson, art teacher at Wilson High School. “Each year, many students devote several hours outside of class to their artwork. This contest is very important to us, it showcases our young artists and aligns with our core community values of supporting local farmers.”
Students were asked to submit original artwork around the theme “You’ve got a lot growing for you” and use inspiration from Portland’s spring and summer seasons and local market goods in their designs.
The finalists are vying for the honor of having his or her artwork printed on the reusable canvas shopping bags as well as a $2,000 scholarship from COUNTRY Financial. The first runner up will receive a scholarship of $1,000 and the second runner up will receive a $500 scholarship. In addition the People’s Choice award of $250 will be presented at the unveiling. The People’s Choice award was decided by a community vote at a gallery event in April.
“All of the submissions were incredible and really showcased the spirit of the Portland Farmers Market and uniqueness of our region,” said Trudy Toliver, executive director of Portland Farmers Market. “The contest is a great way to encourage local youth to learn more about and appreciate the bounty of our region and to think green.”
