Gain insight on the comprehensive efforts underway at Portland Public Schools to improve children’s eating habits, promote wellness, and help children and their families learn about wholesome food. Gather information about the pilot scratch kitchen at one Portland Public School, Abernethy Elementary. Experience the meal that Abernethy students will eat that day in the cafeteria across town and hear from a panel of public school officials, including Berkeley School District’s Chef Ann Cooper, about the work being done at the national and local level to reform school lunches. Hear the outcomes of the analysis of the Abernethy pilot farm to school program and how the lessons learned will shape district-wide change in the years to come, beginning this school year.

Come for lunch and taste a delicious and wholesome scratch-made lunch in the cafeteria. The playground will be transformed into an edible learning experience. Press apples into cider, carve a free pumpkin, meet dairy farmers, learn about potato chips, grind corn into cornmeal, and find out how to prepare gardens for winter while children can dig for worms in live compost.
