Brussels sprouts, or “choux de bruxelles” in France, are thought to be named after the capital of Belgium where they were first cultivated in large quantities during the sixteenth century. One of the few raw vegetables to have originated in northern Europe, Brussel sprouts were first introduced in France and England in the nineteenth century, and they continue to be a popular food in both countries. In fact, Great Britain grows about six times as many Brussels sprouts as the U.S. Americans became familiar with Brussels sprouts when French settlers brought them to Louisiana.
Best in late fall and early winter, Brussels sprouts are one of the few vegetables that are not killed or stunted by cold weather. They are similar to cabbage in taste and appearance, but slightly milder in flavor and denser in texture. Both Brussels sprouts and cabbage are members of the cruciferous vegetable family. These vegetables contain significant amounts of the antioxidants vitamin C and beta-carotene (vitamin A), as well as nitrogen compounds called indoles, which may reduce the risk of certain cancers.
Brussels sprouts have a hearty flavor and tend to go better with flavorful foods such as beef, sharp cheeses, or with stronger seasoned foods. They also make a tasty last-minute addition to soups, stews, and casseroles. Try tossing Brussels sprouts in with your next batch of roasted vegetables to bring out their savory nutty flavor. Small, super-fresh Brussels sprouts are wonderful when steamed or boiled and tossed with one of the following: lemon and brown butter, nuts (pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts or almonds), bacon or pancetta, or cooked, sliced carrots.

Eagle Organic Cranberries from Bandon, Oregon have been at our market for the past few weeks and hope to have enough cranberries to add to your Thanksgiving table. Like all seasonal produce, this fruit is weather dependent. Cranberries are rarely available direct from the farmer, making these fresh tart berries a special treat for our shoppers.
