This holiday season, give the gift of good food while supporting local farmers and food artisans in our region. At our PSU Market on Saturdays through December 19, you’ll find ingredients for all of your holiday meal, along with unique gifts for anyone on your list.
There are many benefits to shopping for holiday gifts at the farmers market. Not only can you avoid the loud, busy malls, but you get to meet the people who grow and prepare your food, learn how it is produced and help support small businesses.
During the summer months you may be more focused on purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables, but in the winter, when there isn’t as much growing in the season, the shift of the market focuses more heavily on products that preserve the summer’s bounty.
We’ve gathered some ideas for creating a variety of locally-sourced gift baskets. We hope they will inspire you to shop at our farmers markets this holiday season!
This time of year, you’ll find a wide variety of beautiful holiday wreathes and centerpieces at the market, made from a variety of foliage and plants, including peppers, dried flowers, branches and magnolia leaves. You can find them in a variety of sizes and price ranges, and each one is beautiful and unique. Pictured here: a fall wreath from Favorite Produce of Oregon.
Dancing Light Ranch has a variety of lavender products perfect for the lavender lover in your life. They have lavender essential oils, body spritz, lip balm, salve, and even lavender sugar! You can purchase them individually or in a holiday gift box.
Groundwork Organics has a variety of spices and sauces available, perfect for the cook in your life. You can pick up a bottle of their homemade sriracha or roasted garlic and poblano hot sauce, or a jar of their prepared horseradish.
Stay cozy this winter with gloves, hats and headbands made from SuDan Farm’s own wool. You can find a variety of colors and sizes for children and adults.
Unbound Pickling has a variety of tasty products perfect for an appetizer tray or holiday drink. Jars are shelf-stable so you can stuff one in a stocking or even ship it via our market shipping station.
Sun Gold Farm’s popcorn is always worth buying, but they’ve put together a special popcorn gift bucket just for the holidays. The bucket includes popping corn on the cob and loose kernels, plus a bucket to serve it in. Would be a great gift for a popcorn lover or movie buff.
Blossom Vinegar vinegars make excellent mocktails and cocktails, dressings and marinades. You can buy them in full-sized bottles (pictured here) or in smaller sampler bottles to let your family or friends try a variety of them. Be sure to ask for recipes to go along with your purchase.
Of course this list is not complete – there are many more fantastic gift ideas available at market. Need some ideas? Stop by our managers or information booths and our staff and volunteers would be happy to help you.
Thank you for supporting Portland Farmers Market and happy holidays!
