Jangano Marimba means “Alliance of Wooden Voices” in Shona, the main language of Zimbabwe. The band started eleven years ago as an after-school class at da Vinci Arts Middle School, and even then, drew on players from other schools. Today Jangano consists of eight elementary, middle and high school players from many schools all over Portland. One thing that makes Jangano stand out is that every year there is someone in the band who composes music for the band. This year Darina’s arrangement of Crank dat Bass will be featured.
Danda Marimba loves to share their love of Zimbabwean marimba music. They have fun while they play and invite the audience to join in the fun through movement or even singing along.
