2019 Portland Farmers Market Reusable Bag Contest Winner Announced

Grant High School Student’s Artwork Selected for 2019 Portland Farmers Market Reusable Bag

Students from Jesuit and Wilson also honored

PORTLAND, Ore. – June 10, 2019 – Portland Farmers Market and COUNTRY Financial® announced Grant High School student Sasha Colon as the winner of the 2019 Portland Farmers Market Reusable Bag Design Contest. Colon’s original artwork was printed on over 1,000 canvas bags that were unveiled and distributed to market goers on Saturday, June 8 at the PSU Farmers Market.  Colon also received a $2,000 scholarship from COUNTRY Financial.

Ezra Scriven from Wilson High School earned second place and a $1,000 scholarship, while Astra Medeiros from Jesuit High School earned third place and a $500 scholarship. Zasu Hostetter Smith, a sophomore at Wilson High School won the People’s Choice Award vote and was presented with a $250 scholarship.

Over one hundred Portland-area high school students submitted original artwork in the ninth annual bag design contest. Students were encouraged to think green and use inspiration from the theme “Growing a Green Future” in their design submissions.

“Sasha is so talented, hardworking and earnest; she truly earned this win with her beautiful work,” said Melody Rockwell, visual arts teacher at Grant High School. ”Contests like this are an amazing opportunity to let our young artists shine and see their work out in the world.”
