New Market to Crop up in Kenton this Summer

by Deborah Pleva

It’s official.  Portland Farmers Market is breaking ground on a new farmers market location in the Kenton neighborhood in North Portland this summer. Kenton Portland Farmers Market will spring up from June 1 to September 28 on Friday evenings from 3 pm to 7 pm on North McClellan Street on each side of Denver Avenue at the flashing light, steps away from the Kenton/N Denver Avenue MAX Station.

About 35 vendor stalls brimming with farm-fresh produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods and other specialty foods will line McClellan Street, which will be closed off during market hours. Neighboring businesses including Cason’s Fine Meats, E-San Thai Cuisine, Kenton Station, Pizza Fino, Po’shines Café, Posies Bakery and Café, and others will stay open to engage with market vendors and shoppers.

This new location helps us to deliver on our mission to contribute to the success of local food growers and producers and create vibrant community gatherings that reflect the surrounding neighborhood. As with all other Portland Farmers Market locations, Kenton market shoppers eligible for SNAP benefits will be able to receive $1 tokens using their Oregon Trail Card to purchase fruit, vegetables, meat, bread, cheese and some baked goods.

The Kenton Business Association and Kenton Neighborhood Association played an integral role in bringing this market to the Kenton neighborhood, tucked between the Columbia River to the north, I-5 to the east, North Lombard Street to the south and North Chautauqua and North Portland Road to the west.

PFM is thrilled to partner with local community leaders and business owners to bring fresh, local food to the heart of the growing Kenton business district. The participation of neighboring businesses, the unique location, and the live music will create a festive, street-fair atmosphere. Plus, it’s the first time we’ve ever operated a Friday night market. We invite all Portlanders to join us at these hopping summer evening events in Kenton this summer!
